Philosophy Term Paper Topics DescartesOf all the philosophy term paper topics available for students, Descartes is one of the most controversial. There are people who claim that it isn't even philosophy at all but an outright deception. Why does Descartes get to be at the center of such controversy?
Descartes had the advantage of being one of the first philosophical writers. He wrote a lot about philosophy and there were other philosophers reading about his works. What they observed was that his views did not fit with what they knew about philosophy. They disagreed with him and Descartes lost his reputation as a philosopher.
This brought about many years of academic debate. One of the key things they disagreed about was the nature of knowledge. Some people believed that knowledge is independent of our mental faculties, while others argued that knowledge is a product of our mental faculties. Both sides used Descartes' writings to further their arguments.
The main argument of the Descartes versus the British debate was not about whether knowledge was a product of the mind or an independent phenomenon. It was about whether it could be learned or taught by someone else. This would mean that someone who didn't have the gift of learning could teach others about philosophy, but this wouldn't be philosophy because the students wouldn't be able to learn what they needed to know.
Descartes eventually lost his position in his university. Many of his books were banned, and he was made to prove that he really was a philosopher. It was finally discovered that he did not hold to the same views as his fellow professors, and that he was a self-taught fraud.
Despite the fact that he had no philosophical training, Descartes was able to write some wonderful works. He gave us a theory of how we understand the world around us. He also gave us a science of man and the universe. When asked why it wasn't possible for someone to learn these things through learning alone, he answered that we don't need to learn everything there is to know about the world in order to understand it.
Descartes also claimed that our experience of the world is limited. He believed that only those things that we can see or touch are real. So, it follows that we should only need to know things that can be seen or touched. He used the concept of 'cogito ergo sum' to show that if we assume that there is only one thing to learn then we will have assumed that nothing needs to be learned.
Descartes used a new logical method that we still use today. He believed that the only thing we need to learn about are those things that we can see or touch. It seems that his assumption of this method is flawed, but it has been accepted and used by all generations since then.
